Focus & Treat – Foundation Game for Dogs

Hello you lovely pet parent, you!

This is a foundation game to repeat whenever you can – it’ll help build up your dog’s focus on you – which is the basis for a wonderful relationship.

The more of our dog’s focus we have, the more they look to us in other situations – where we might need it a bit more urgently.

So it’s something to build up that can help in recall, loose lead walking, general behaviour and which helps strengthen our relationship with our dog.

Step by Steps

1. Have your dog sit down and wait for you
2. Hold a treat near your face
3. When your dog looks at you instead of the treat say ‘Yes’ to mark the behaviour you want and give them the treat.
4. Gradually move the treat further away from your face each time so they have to make more of a decided effort to look at you.

Tips

Be patient waiting for the look, give your dog time to realise they need to look at you first
If your dog just isn’t looking at you at all, start with the slightest of glances and build from there
Try and make sure your dog is successful so if you’ve found the limit of their skills for the moment and you need to bring the treat a bit nearer your face again that’s fine.
